Sovereign is New Zealand’s largest life insurance company, providing a range of personal, health, home loan and investment products for more than 650,000 customers.

From the beginning, where AMS developed Sovereign’s initial Life Insurance solution, we have worked together to get the outcomes Sovereign needed to manage their business.

More recently AMS have provided the migration expertise to help Sovereign realise their vision of reducing the number legacy systems; consolidating almost all of their Life Insurance business onto the AMS platform. In doing this Sovereign have been able to realise significant benefits in simplification and cost reduction.


OnePath is one of NZ’s largest financial services providers, owned by ANZ Bank. It was the FundSource Fund Manager of the Year and KiwiSaver Manager of the Year for 2012 and the Morningstar Fund Manager of the Year 2012.

OnePath uses AMS’ Life Insurance solution nationally across the ANZ Bank’s branch network to quote and sell their bank assurance product set. Our web based sales administration application is in use daily by ANZ’s business consultants; accessing their customer policy information; performing needs analysis, quoting and pricing insurance cover based on various customer scenarios and confirming insurance cover for those customers whose risk has been adequately assessed by our online underwriting engine.

In the “back office” AMS’ Life Insurance solution streamlines further complex underwriting functions as well as automating full policy life cycle administration and integrated fund accounting providing real efficiencies for the benefit of OnePath’s customers. AMS has enjoyed a strong partnership relationship with OnePath since the origins of NBNZ Life.

Kiwi Insurance

Kiwibank launched in 2002 as a 100% owned NZ Bank and has grown to more than 835,000 customers. AMS works with Kiwi Insurance which is a sister company of Kiwibank, delivering a real time, integrated sales and policy administration solution into its complex banking architecture.

Kiwi Insurance uses AMS’ Life Insurance solution nationally across the Kiwibank/Post Office branch network to quote and sell their growing Life Insurance product portfolio. Our web based sales administration application is in use daily by Post Office staff to quote and sell. Our core Policy Administration solution, incorporating our automated underwriting engine, is used to manage the lifecycle of the product.

The AMS solution provides an end to end automated suite which, when integrated into Kiwibank’s core applications, delivers real value to Kiwi Insurance. Customer information; loan information; banking information; payments; can be processed and shared across the wider infrastructure providing flexibility and efficiency.

Since 2011 AMS and Kiwi Insurance have enjoyed an excellent partnership focussed on delivering a robust; flexible; integrated solution to help drive Kiwi Insurance’s business forward.

Employee Management

Auckland DHB

New Zealand’s biggest district health board (DHB) serves a large part of Auckland city and handles around one million patients each year. Auckland DHB has around 9,500 staff, is the largest trainer of doctors in the country and has a large clinical research facility. 

ADHB selected AMS as the HR & Payroll solution in 1994. Continued support and on-going product improvement have included the employee and manager self-service kiosk for management of various clinical professional education entitlements, management of workplace Incidents, training and skills management.

AMS are proud to continue to work closely with ADHB to provide robust, high-speed and accurate pay processing and people management processes and reporting.

Hawke’s Bay District Health Board

Hawke’s Bay District Health Board (HBDHB) with a staff of around 2,700 services 155,000 people on the east coast of the North Island. For people who work there, an online HR experience starts right from the moment they apply for their job.

HBDHB and AMS partnered successfully together to develop a Hospital rostering application specifically for the NZ environment. Closely integrated with our HR/Payroll solution the inclusion of rostering; electronic timesheets and award interpretation has delivered an excellent end to end solution.

The Roster to pay environment has provided HBDHB a highly efficient and effective solution enabling accuracy of pay and cost effective processing.

Ministry for Primary Industries

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) was formed in 2011 following the merger of the Ministries of Agriculture and Forestry, Fisheries and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. It is a significant contributor to the Government’s Business Growth Agenda. MPI selected AMS to be their HR & Payroll solution provider in November 2011, selecting a full Outsourced model. In addition to providing and maintaining the technology environment, AMS became MPI’s payroll partner, undertaking pays, providing custom management information, HR systems support and providing MPI’s 2,300 staff with frontline support for payroll queries.

AMS have a structured partnering approach for their clients which has supported MPI’s vision for developing its HR support systems. Working closely together, MPI and AMS have developed a Continuous Improvement Program to streamline and automate HR and payroll processes, and deliver greater efficiency in HR and Payroll processing systems.

Nelson Marlborough

Nelson Marlborough DHB has a staff of more than 2,600. It serves a large geographic region at the top of the South Island, which has a permanent population of 120,000.

With AMS’ Roster to Pay solution from in place, the DHB has been able to deliver an accurate and effective payroll function. Ongoing work to roll out the comprehensive list of HR functions, completing the full HRIS puzzle, is progressing well.

Waitemata DHB

Waitemata District Health Board (WDHB) serves the largest DHB population in the country - more than 560,000 people. They employ around 6,800 people in more than 30 different locations serving residents of North Shore City, Waitakere City and the Rodney district.

WDHB use AMS as their HR/Payroll solution utilising the core payroll functions and management reporting along with enhance sick leave functionality developed in partnership with the DHB.

Over and above this WDHB are on a HR automation journey implementing online claims management and Learning and development HR processes across the business to attain high levels of accuracy and effectiveness.


healthAlliance (hA) is a shared service entity who serves the four Northern District Health Boards of for Northland DHB, Waitemata DHB, Auckland DHB and Counties Manukau DHB. The shared service provides an opportunity to provide efficient and effective delivery of non-frontline transactional support services for both the DHBs and other state owned enterprises. It also enables regional alignment and standardisation of activities; centres of excellence and expertise and staff development through integrated and seamless processes.

Servicing some of NZ’s larger DHBs for accurate payroll and leave management is an enviable challenge that requires robust software and processes. AMS solutions provide the systems capability which is melded with the skilled hA team to provide robust and efficient processing.

Over and above this hA, the DHBs and the SOEs are on a HR automation journey implementing AMS’ establishment management and transactional HR processes across the business to attain high levels of accuracy and effectiveness.

Ministry of Justice

The Ministry of Justice delivers court and tribunal services including collection of fines and reparation, provides policy advice and negotiates Treaty of Waitangi claims on behalf of the Government. Approximately 2,900 Ministry staff work in 103 different locations around New Zealand.

AMS LEADER has been the Payroll HRMIS of choice for the Ministry for over 10 years. It’s reliability has provided the back bone of staff remuneration services.

Manukau Institute of Technology

The Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) offers more than 1,500 tertiary level courses to nearly 20,000 students, especially those from the multicultural Counties Manukau area.

MIT use AMS LEADER as their system solution for paying their employees and managing most of their leave. Now MIT management can get a full view of their organisation via LEADER KIOSK. Driving forward with more self-service options like online leave and management reporting is enabling MIT to provide more transparency of people resources and costs to their decision makers.  


Braemar Hospital, located in Hamilton, is one of the largest private hospitals in New Zealand. It offers a comprehensive range of specialist services, with more than 100 Specialists together with highly qualified support staff utilising state of the art facilities and medical equipment.

In partnership with Braemar Hospital, AMS have delivered a roster to pay solution which delivers high levels of accuracy and efficiency. Braemar chose biometric readers for “clocking” staff in and out of work which enables an even greater efficiency in time authentication and approval. This allows staff and management to get on with their core value add activities.

Braemar Hospital are now looking to expand the benefits of choosing AMS as their HR/Payroll partner in implementing more of the HR functionality provided in the core solution.

Open Polytechnic

Each year around 40,000 mainly adult students enrol at this Government-owned and funded distance learning institution. It has 120 full-time academic staff and more than 320 adjunct Faculty (mostly off-campus) to operate the programmes for its eight specialist schools.

The Open Polytechnic chose AMS to deliver an outsourced service delivering the AMS LEADER as a hosted solution. This enables them to get access to all of the HR/Payroll functions without having to worry about new hardware, infrastructure or software.
